Who Knew?

At 10 weeks old, Eli weighs 12 pounds (50% ) and is 24 inches long (79%). We have a tall boy!

I figured it out. Motherhood means your heart is no longer inside of you; it's outside wherever my little boy is. And my little boy is not feeling too hot. I thought I was prepared for his vaccinations and I put on my big girl pants and held my little boy's arms down while they pricked his precious chubby thighs...three times. The look on his face immediately brought tears to my eyes. and then the screaming. oh goodness, tears were rolling down my face then. I didn't know I would react like that, but I just knew my sweet boy was shocked and hurting, and there went my heart.

The rest of the day was pretty miserable for my little man. He refused to sleep, mainly b/c he was miserable. His eyes were half open and he moaned for hours. The doctor told us to try to not give him any tylenol b/c someone out there thinks it might reduce the effectiveness of the vaccines, but I couldn't stand it any longer. My baby was exhausted and miserable, and I felt so bad for him. We gave him some tylenol around 9, and tried to convince him to eat a little something, and then he conked out at 10. He slept all night until 7, and woke up happy. I thought he was fine, and took him for a morning walk. Around 11, he became miserable again...and hot. My poor baby had a low fever. The moaning began again.

So, I started looking up alternative vaccination schedules. I'm thinking of following the Dr. Sears' schedule where he will still get all of the vaccines, but will only get the most pertinent ones for him right now. Does he really need Polio and Hepatitus B right now? Nope. I know they are all probably very important, but I also know my baby was miserable. And my heart broke. And he's still not feeling very well. Anyone else look into alternative vaccination schedules?

  1. I burst into tears too when Collin got his first round of shots! I was also shocked at my outpour of emotion, I had no idea I would respond like that. Sorry to hear that Eli still isn't feeling well from his shots though! :(

  2. Hi! I came across your blog via Ashley's blog. But, I use the Dr. Sear's Alternative Vaccine Schedule. I have his book The Vaccine Book, and have used the schedule since my little girl was born. She is now 11 months, and honestly has never had any sort of reaction to her shots. We do not have to use tylenol, or anything post visit. With the schedule they are only getting one live virus at a time, causing them to not have the typical reactions with multiple shots. All in all, I have been extremely happy with it!

  3. I've already told Josh I wanted him to take ours to the doctor! (he already has to take my dog to the vet because I hate to see her so scared and yelp from shots)! Can't imagine how it will feel with my baby!

  4. Carter was super pitiful for a few days after his 2 month shots and I dreaded returning for the 4 month ones but, much to my surprise (and delight), he did tremendously better for those shots! There was less crying and he felt better faster. Low and behold, the 6 month shots were even better than the 4 month shots and again, he felt yucky even less time! I took a bottle with me to the appointment and after consoling him for a few minutes, popped it in his mouth and let him guzzle it down. It calmed him down tremendously, he fell asleep in the car on the way home, and then slept off the initial shot shock for 2 hours. This worked great at 4 and 6 months. Shots are no fun but maybe there's hope that he will do better next time.

  5. Miles was pathetic after his 2 month shots. I talked to our new Dr. here in M'boro cause I was concerned about Miles's reactions and he said that they combine their shots differently than the Knox Ped. Assoc. I believe it because Miles had NO reaction to the shots here! It was crazy. He was happy the whole day, it was like he didn't even get the shots!

  6. I use my own alternative vaccination schedule. While I've caught some flack from our pediatrician for it, I believe that as a Mom, I know what is best for my children. I choose to vaccinate differently for a couple of reasons and it has always worked fine. Oh and just so you know- the shots never get easier for Mommas. At least not for me. My kids are 5,4 and 18 months and I tear up or cry at every shot visit....big girl pants and all.
