To Induce or Not to Induce...

As of my last week's doctor's appointment, my doctor told me that she would like to induce on the 24th...THIS WEDNESDAY! That's only about 6 days away! I told her I needed to think about it. I originally had a birth plan I wanted to stick to--stay at home as long as possible when contractions start, be in the comfort of my own home for awhile, etc. My OB is going out of town April 1-6, so if I wait to go into labor, and am late like most first-time mommas are, then she will not be here to deliver me...I will have a stranger bringing this sweet boy into the world. Does that bother me? I don't know.

I have read that if I am artificially induced, labors are typically longer, harder, and more likely to end up in a c-section...all three of which don't sound fun at all. I know some people who have been induced and delivered naturally just a few hours later, so I know there is no way to know what it will be like. When we went to the doctor yesterday, we told her we would like another appt. earlier next week, and an ultrasound to see what Eli's estimated weight is, and would like to be checked to see where I am in terms of progress. As of yesterday, there was none. If he is still little and there is no progress next week, I may just wait it out, and let him come when he is ready. Opinions? Experiences? Anyone...anyone?

  1. Don't induce! Unless something is wrong with the baby, I wouldn't.

  2. Don't induce!! Wait it out. I was induced and wish I wasn't. I wish I had the excitement of starting labor at home without notice. Honestly, when it came down to it, I could have cared less who my doctor was. The doc doesn't really do anything until show time. The nurses are going to be with you from start to finish and hopefully you get a good one! Plus, you DON'T want to increase your chances of a c-section! Ok, I'm done preaching :)

  3. EVERYTHING that Katie said! She summed it up! I would not wish a c-section recovery on anyone with a newborn. It's pretty much the worst thing ever! I couldn't even carry my baby up the stairs to her room for a couple weeks. Not to mention all the drugs I was on, so I wasn't able to drive. Needless to say, after all the research I have done, I would say to really just wait til he decides to come on his own. He WILL come on his own at some point. It's hard to avoid being selfish when you are so miserable (believe me, I know) but babies will really come when they are meant to. Who cares who catches him when he comes out, all that matters is that he comes out when he is done baking!

I think you know what you want to do. Just be patient, and stand up for yourself. You are not sick, you are pregnant, and you can decide for yourself what you want! The joy of being a mom!
